The story
Musselbaren started with a single, clear idea: to bring the blue mussel into the realm of serious dining. Not as a side act, but as the undisputed star. The original bar in Lyckorna, Ljungskile, is where that idea first took shape – and it remains the beating heart of everything the restaurant does.
The setting is the old Clock Tower on the Bohuslän coast, where guests sit on benches at sturdy wooden tables, many outdoors with the fjord close at hand. On a warm summer evening the place fills quickly, and friendly staff carry out pot after black pot, each brimming with mussels gently cooked with root vegetables and chili. The broth has a lovely sting to it. Homemade aioli arrives alongside – flavoured on the day with something unexpected like rhubarb or raspberry – and of course fries. "Just let us know if you'd like more," the staff say, and they mean it.
The mussels come from Scanfjords' farms in the fjords around Orust, practically next door. That proximity is not incidental: it is the whole philosophy. Blue mussels are among the most nutritious and sustainable ingredients the sea can offer, and Musselbaren has built its identity around making that case – deliciously. The menu also carries fish and chips and vegetarian options for the unconvinced, but the kitchen's best argument is always in the pot.
White Guide recognised Musselbaren Lyckorna as a recommended address, praising the mussels as "simply insanely delicious" – a rare moment of unguarded enthusiasm from a guide not given to overstatement.
Guests who want to go deeper can book a mussel expedition aboard the restaurant's own boat, M/S Märta, harvesting their dinner straight from the fjord before sitting down to eat it. The Clock Tower is also home to Klocktornet Destilleri, an award-winning small distillery whose gin makes for a natural aperitif or digestif. The two operations share a spirit of place – rooted in the Bohuslän landscape, unhurried, and quietly proud of what the sea provides.
