Tant Anton

A red house at the edge of the rocks in Kungshamn, serving playful small plates with Greek, Japanese and Bohuslän influences. Recognised by White Guide 2026.

The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

Walk to the very end of the quay in Kungshamn, past the point where most visitors assume the town simply runs out of land, and you'll find a red house clinging to the cliff's edge. That's Tant Anton — and it is exactly as characterful as its location suggests.

A Place That Earns Its Name

The name, as the staff will cheerfully tell you (they've been asked before), traces back to a slightly wobbly late-night walk across Smögenbron by the owners. It sets the tone perfectly: this is a restaurant with personality, warmth and a healthy sense of humour. Step inside on a cooler evening and the feeling, as White Guide put it in their 2026 recognition, is like arriving at your cool aunt's place — someone with a sharp eye for design and a fondness for kitsch, held together in a genuinely charming mix.

The Food: Playful, Precise, Surprising

The menu is built around sharing — smaller plates that draw from Greece, Japan and the west-coast Swedish region of Bohuslän all at once. It sounds like it shouldn't work. It does. Dishes like latino-skagen served with fried flatbread, or beef fillet tataki with ponzu and cheese crackers, are described by White Guide reviewers as playful, surprising and very good. The kitchen's confidence comes through in the chef's tasting selection, which lets the cooks guide the evening across several courses.

Terraces, Views and the Right Kind of Crowd

The outdoor seating rises in tiers along the cliffside, each level offering its own angle over the sea and the Smögen bridge. On summer evenings the terraces fill with a relaxed mix — families on holiday, groups of friends stopping on their way to Smögen — and the atmosphere is easy and unpretentious. The wine list comes with solid descriptions, though the house cocktails, personal and inventive, tend to draw the most attention.

Tant Anton also has a sister address in Gothenburg on Linnegatan, but the Kungshamn original, perched above the water with the rocks below and the archipelago beyond, is something else entirely.
