Smaca

Smaca on Lilla Torg serves modern Swedish cuisine with local produce, ambitious wines, and cocktails in a warm, welcoming setting. White Guide recognised.

The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

On Lilla Torg in central Kristianstad, Restaurang Smaca has built a reputation as the kind of place you arrive for dinner and leave well after you intended to. The room feels more like a comfortable living room than a formal dining space — soft sofas, mole-brown walls softened by olive-green accents, lit lanterns, and white orchids. The open kitchen means you can watch the cooks at work and, if you feel like it, walk up and talk to them about what they're making.

The restaurant is run by Martin and Carina Skoog, whose philosophy is straightforward: well-made food from local and seasonal produce, cooked from scratch. The White Guide awarded Smaca its Fine level recognition in 2026, singling out the kitchen's ability to move naturally between modern gastronomy and timeless classics — a balance that is harder to achieve than it sounds.

The food and drink

Swedish cuisine is the backbone of the menu, but it wears that identity lightly. A steak sandwich made with dry-aged Scanian beef is the kind of dish that lifts the mood the moment it arrives. Cured sea bass comes with a fluffy potato purée, pickled yellow beet, and a red wine and crayfish jus that is precisely salted. The house sorbet — black currant, apple, and sea buckthorn — is a clean, bright finish, and the Scanian cheese board with local alpine-style, white-mould, and blue-mould cheeses, served with a homemade tomato and vanilla marmalade, is reason enough to linger.

Lunch runs Monday to Saturday and changes daily, with a vegetarian option every weekday and a weekly fish dish. The approach is the same as in the evening: local ingredients, honest cooking.

Beverages are taken seriously. Drinks manager Julia selects wines that pair deliberately with the food — the White Guide noted an Alsace Riesling as a particularly good match for the cured fish. The local apple juice is another option worth considering. At the bar, cocktails are thoughtful and well-executed, and the wine list rewards those who want to explore by the glass.

Who comes here

Smaca draws a genuinely mixed crowd — business lunchers, families drawn in by the children's menu and the relaxed atmosphere, and regulars who come for the Swedish cuisine and stay for the bar. The service is warm without being performative. It is the kind of restaurant that works for a weekday lunch and a long Saturday evening in equal measure.

White Guide — Fine level
