The story
Walking into Barrica Mat & Vinbar feels, in the restaurant's own words, like "a quick return trip to Spain." The open kitchen fills the room with the scent of salt-kissed shellfish and grilled meat, glasses clink, pans clatter, and the energy is exactly what you'd hope for from a back-street Barcelona spot. It's the kind of place where someone drops in from the pedestrian street for a beer and some snacks, and ends up staying the whole evening as the atmosphere builds.
That easy-going spirit earned Barrica a place in the White Guide, which describes it plainly as "fiesta" — perfectly relaxed and ideal for afterwork drinks or a birthday dinner with friends.
The Spanish menu moves from small bites to sharing plates. Colourful sangría arrives alongside corn on the cob charred in truffle butter — a combination the White Guide singles out as one of the more memorable pairings on the menu. A basket of fritto misto — crispy fried baby squid — conjures a Barcelona beach bar, especially alongside a cold albariño. Tapas and pintxos cover the crowd-pleasing ground, while larger sharing plates give the table something to linger over.
The standout among the mains is grilled pluma — pork neck in plain Scanian — a cut that manages to be firm, flavourful, and tender at the same time. It's the kind of dish that makes the case for Spanish cuisine beyond the obvious.
As the name suggests, wine is taken seriously here. The list leans heavily on bottles from across Spain, with a thoughtful spread of regions, and a smaller selection available by the glass. The bar also hosts regular tasting events — sparkling wine evenings, rosé explorations — reflecting a genuine curiosity about what's in the glass, not just what's on the plate. A fine Fino Sherry alongside thinly sliced Pata Negra is offered as its own small ritual, and it's hard to argue with that logic.
Barrica is the sort of Spanish wine bar that earns its reputation through consistency and character rather than spectacle — and the White Guide recognition confirms that Helsingborg noticed.
