The story
Mommas has long been part of Kiruna's fabric. Before the city's historic relocation, Mommas Steakhouse was a fixture in local life — a warm, lived-in place where residents gathered and hunger was reliably satisfied. That spirit carries forward into Mommas Bar och Kök, now occupying the ground floor of Scandic Kiruna, a striking building at Stadshustorget whose silhouette pays tribute to Kebnekaise and Lapporten. Architect Thomas Sandell's design rises above the new city centre, and Mommas anchors it with a sense of continuity.
Under head chef Alexander Meier, the kitchen has taken a deliberate step forward while staying firmly rooted in place. The menu is built around local Swedish ingredients sourced from the surrounding region, and Norrbotten's larder is treated with evident care. Reindeer from a Sami village arrives paired with juniper mustard — a combination that speaks directly to the landscape outside. The smoked whitefish tacos are a more adventurous proposition: served with chimichurri, aji amarillo, and the traditional Sami sweet bread gahkkubröd, they balance saltiness and heat with real precision. These are dishes that know where they come from.
The dining room carries a sober, considered aesthetic — woodcraft, copper, and leather details that feel deliberate rather than decorative. For those who know the old Mommas, the Japanese-inspired food bears are a quiet nod to the steakhouse booths that once defined the space. The wine list leans toward the old world, favouring classics over novelty.
White Guide awarded Mommas Bar och Kök its Fine level recognition for 2026, noting that the kitchen "proudly showcases the best that Norrbotten has to offer." That assessment rings true. This is Swedish cuisine grounded in a specific place and a specific history — and it handles both with confidence.
