The story
At the edge of Kiruna, where the forest meets the mountain world, Camp Ripan's restaurant draws its inspiration directly from the territory surrounding it. The kitchen's stated ambition is to serve "what the land, lakes, rivers, forests and mountains provide" — a philosophy that shapes every plate. That commitment has earned the restaurant recognition in the White Guide at Fine level, and the Slow Food Sápmi quality label, awarded for food that is good, clean and fair.
The cultural backdrop is equally specific. Kiruna sits at the meeting point of three traditions — Swedish, Sami and Tornedalian — and the restaurant lets all three inform its Swedish cuisine. This is not a vague nod to the north; it is a deliberate, documented rootedness in the region's identity.
Camp Ripan is a Swan-certified operation, and the restaurant is described as one of Sweden's most climate-smart kitchens. Meat is always Swedish, often sourced from northern Sweden, and ingredients are chosen for both season and sustainability. Food waste is taken seriously enough to be measured: a collaboration with Generation Waste means every gram of waste is weighed, making reduction an accountable, ongoing process rather than an aspiration.
The kitchen's approach extends to composting and energy recovery, and to locally made details — the tables in the dining room were built in-house from local timber. Small choices, the team believes, lead to meaningful change.
The à la carte restaurant seats 90 and can expand to 200 for larger events, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner to both hotel guests and locals. Group menus are available as three-course formats, with a tasting menu bookable for larger parties during certain periods. Dinner is also central to the spa packages — guests move from the Aurora Spa's outdoor pools and saunas to a three-course meal inspired by the season and the landscape of the north.
The Swedish cuisine here is specific to place: the forests, the rivers, the cultural memory of Sápmi. That specificity is precisely what the White Guide recognised, and what makes a meal at Camp Ripan worth travelling to Kiruna for.
