The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A Former Photo Studio, Transformed

Off Katrineholm's pedestrian street, Fotografens Café & Bistro kept a deliberately low profile. Step through the art passage, however, and the mood shifted immediately: colourful paintings by local artist Ridwan Yudhisia lined the walls, signalling that something more considered was waiting inside. The former photography studio — complete with a courtyard and a harmoniously designed orangery — had been reimagined as a place where a morning breakfast roll and a proper evening dinner could coexist without either feeling out of place.

Swedish Hospitality at Its Most Inclusive

That breadth was precisely what set Fotografens apart. Families with children, colleagues out for a corporate evening, couples on a quiet date — all found their place here. The Swedish bistro format, done well, asks a kitchen to be versatile without being vague, and Fotografens answered that challenge convincingly enough to earn recognition at the Fine level in the White Guide 2026. The guide noted the welcoming range of the offering and the distinctive character of the space as key to the experience.

A Community Built Around the Table

Beyond daily service, Fotografens cultivated a genuine sense of regulars and ritual. The Råbiffssällskap — a steak tartare society — grew to over 400 members, gathering for dedicated evenings around one of Swedish cuisine's more demanding classics. A parallel group, the Vinvänner, kept members informed of drinks events and wine tastings. These weren't marketing exercises; they were the kind of loyal, recurring gatherings that only form around a place people genuinely want to return to.

A Fond Farewell

The restaurant has since closed its doors, with the team expressing warm gratitude to every guest, and to the kitchen, dishwashing, and front-of-house staff who made it what it was. The space on Köpmangatan 12 awaits a new operator — and the legacy of what Fotografens built, a Swedish café and bistro that earned national recognition while remaining rooted in its community, is a high bar to inherit.
