The story
Tryckeriet Kök & Bar occupies a space on Kungsgatan 16 with genuine history behind it. Nya Wermlands-Tidningen, one of the region's major newspapers, once ran both its editorial office and printing house from this address during the first half of the twentieth century. When the previous tenant, Harry's, closed after 23 years, the same franchisees held onto the premises and chose to reimagine the space entirely — this time as a more refined destination for Swedish cuisine in Karlstad.
The nod to the building's past is woven into the details. Menus are named after different paper sizes, a quiet, considered tribute to the printers who once worked here.
White Guide awarded Tryckeriet its Fine level recognition in 2026, and the review points to specific reasons why. The mountain trout, served with vendace roe and a creamy celeriac purée, is singled out as a standout. Equally praised is the soft-baked pork side from rapeseed-fed pork — the kind of ingredient-led cooking that defines thoughtful Swedish cuisine at its best. The guide notes that service is attentive, though dishes can occasionally arrive in quick succession.
The dining room is large and fills with guests of all ages, generating what the guide describes as a pleasant hum of conversation. In summer, a generous outdoor terrace opens onto Stora Torget, Karlstad's main square, making it one of the better spots in the city to watch the day unfold over a meal. The "Table With View" tag is well earned.
Tryckeriet is the kind of place where a historic address, a clear culinary identity rooted in Swedish produce, and a lively room come together without any of it feeling forced.
