The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A Waterfront Table Worth Seeking Out

Slipkajen sits on Varvsholmen in Kalmar, right on the water's edge, where the evening sky turns over the Kalmar Strait and the old district of Ängö. The setting is deliberately modern – raw brick walls, glass, and concrete – yet the atmosphere is anything but cold. Regulars settle into sofa groups, the chef moves between kitchen and tables to chat with guests, and the room hums with the kind of ease that takes real effort to create.

The White Guide recognized Slipkajen at Fine level in 2026, noting that the quality of the food and the warmth of the service hold firm regardless of the surroundings. The restaurant traces its roots to the taverns near Kalmar Castle, and that spirit of generous, well-prepared cooking has followed it to its current address.

Food Cooked from Scratch

The kitchen works from the ground up. Lunch brings a daily dish alongside weekly fish, a salad option, a vegetarian alternative, and what the restaurant describes as its popular meatballs. From mid-June, a dock lunch – brygglunch – extends the offer outdoors by the water.

Evenings shift to an à la carte menu built to suit different occasions, whether a relaxed after-work drink or a proper dinner. The White Guide's reviewers singled out a pepper-flambéed butcher steak with green pepper sauce, cooked to exact doneness, and a delicately handled sea bass with browned butter – both dishes that show a kitchen confident enough not to overcomplicate things. Dessert brought homemade passion-fruit gelato, a clean, precise finish.

The GT Factor

Slipkajen takes its gin and tonic seriously. The selection of gins, tonics, and house combinations is broad enough that the GT has become a signature alongside the food itself – a rare combination that the White Guide called out specifically. It makes the restaurant as fitting for an unhurried aperitif as for a full dinner.

Celebrations and Private Events

Year-round, Slipkajen accommodates weddings, parties, and private dinners, tailoring each arrangement to the group. The kitchen also prepares dishes for takeaway and pre-ordered business lunches – a practical side that doesn't distract from what the restaurant does best at the table.

History

White Guide — Fine level

We apologize for the Gothenburg joke, but we have a reason for it – it’s polished at Slipkajen. The taverns behind the restaurant at Kalmar Castle have left the medieval fortress and moved to the slightly more popular Varvsholmen. The fact that you eat like a king remains, as does the friendly service and the high quality of the food. The venue, however, is considerably more modern; raw brick walls meet glass and concrete, and at the tables you have a view of the sunset that colors the sky over the Kalmar Strait and the old district of Ängö. The chef gladly sits down and talks with the guests, and in the sofa groups a couple of regulars are tasting the establishment’s latest GT. For even though the food is the main offering, GT is the specialty; the selection of gins, tonics, and combinations disappoints no one. And the food doesn’t disappoint either – we order a pepper‑flambéed butcher steak with green pepper sauce, cooked to perfect doneness, and enjoy a delicately handled sea bass with browned butter before moving on to the homemade passion‑fruit gelato and finishing with the week’s GT.
