Celebrated table

Postgatan

Postgatan in Kalmar is a White Guide-recognised Swedish restaurant serving tongue-in-cheek Nordic food rooted in Småland and Öland, with wines from small producers.

The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

Postgatan describes itself as "en gastronomisk fritidsgård" – a gastronomic youth club of sorts – and that self-aware warmth tells you almost everything you need to know. This is a place to hang out, eat well and take it easy: part grown-up living room, part serious kitchen.

The Food

The Swedish cooking here is firmly rooted in the landscapes immediately around Kalmar. Flavours from Småland and Öland arrive via a network of local growers, hunters and small-scale producers – relationships that show up directly on the plate and in the stock pot. Guests can build their evening around small dishes (smapas), main courses, or a multi-course tasting menu, and a cheese trolley now makes the rounds in the dining room.

White Guide awarded Postgatan its "Very fine level" recognition, and the jury's notes read like a love letter to the kitchen's precision and personality. Among the standout dishes singled out: herb-baked wild duck from Södermöre, served with yellowfoot mushrooms, quince and an umami broth poured tableside from a pretty jug. The butter-fried turbot fillet, swimming in a frothy mussel sauce and crowned with deep-fried kale, drew equal admiration. These are dishes that feel both carefully considered and completely unforced.

The Drinks

The wine list is built on the same philosophy as the menu – small producers, clear origins, wines with character. Classic regions sit alongside newer discoveries, all chosen to complement the food rather than overshadow it. The team actively guides guests toward the right glass, and the selection of beers follows the same small-producer logic. As White Guide put it, the variety of well-chosen wines and beers makes you "pretty much want to drink your dinner."

The Atmosphere

The room at Postgatan has recently evolved: new round tables give guests more breathing room, and the kitchen itself is gaining space too. But the spirit remains unchanged. On any given evening the crowd might include couples, wine enthusiasts at the bar, a group of golfers and a few eccentrics – all of them treated like old friends by the people who run the place. The team's desire to share knowledge and enthusiasm fizzes through every interaction, making long, chatty evenings feel entirely natural.

White Guide — Very fine level

For many years we’ve wondered how seven, eight, nine, even ten-course menus could be composed with such feeling by a few friends in a small kitchen. And now that Postgatan’s new concept is beginning to settle, with guests getting more room at the new round tables, it’s the kitchen’s turn – more space and air is in the offing there too. Tongue-in-cheek Nordic is the tune here, with flavours from Småland and Öland. What ends up on you plate or in the stock is often a manifestation of local friendships with growers, hunters and small-scale producers. Choose small dishes (‘smapas’), main courses or a tasting menu. There’s even a cheese trolley in the dining room these days! Best on the smapas menu is herb-baked wild duck from Södermöre with sweet and tart yellowfoot, quince and an umami broth the cook himself pours onto your plate from a pretty jug. The flavours fly in fine formation with a just-so easy-going burgundy. Our favourite among the main courses is the butter-fried turbot fillet swimming in a frothy mussel sauce and crowned by deep-fried kale. The variety of well-chosen wines and beers with interesting origins and from small producers make you pretty much want to drink your dinner. The evening grows chattily long, with new diners joining in, making us a mix of eccentrics, couples, a group of golfers, two turtle doves and some wine nerds at the bar. The Postgatan people speak to us all as if we were their good friends. The place fizzes with the desire to share knowledge, and we’re already looking forward to our next visit.
