The story
At the southern end of the pier in Hunnebostrand, one of Bohuslän's most picturesque harbour villages, Perssons på Kajen draws a loyal crowd every summer. The restaurant is the seasonal project of Gothenburg restaurateurs Björn and Sofie Persson, who have brought genuine warmth and a sharp eye for produce to this waterside address. The setting is hard to beat: a generous terrace right at the water's edge, sheltered by a roof and glass walls that keep the wind at bay while keeping the views wide open.
The kitchen leans into its surroundings, drawing on ingredients from sea and land nearby. The menu offers real breadth — a classic S.O.S. snack to start, burrata with charred tomatoes, a well-made burger, and the day's catch prepared with care (hake with a browned butter hollandaise has been a recent highlight). A Swedish classic like råbiff "kalv i dill" sits comfortably alongside the lighter options, making this a place where most tables find something they want. The cooking is rooted in the Swedish tradition without being rigid about it.
Desserts are worth saving room for. The dark chocolate semifreddo with salted caramel foam is a fitting close as the sun drops behind the boats in the guest harbour — one of those Hunnebostrand sunsets the restaurant rightly celebrates.
Perssons has put thought into its drinks list. Alongside a solid core wine selection, the team has sourced a handful of limited-edition bottles — self-imported finds that reward the curious. The cocktail menu runs from a Frozen Margarita and Negroni to house creations like the Rosa Himmel, a strawberry-foam gin drink that suits the summer light well.
White Guide recognition at Fine level reflects what regulars already know: this is a restaurant that delivers quality and character in equal measure. It gets busy on warm July evenings — a small price to pay for a table this close to the water.
Perssons på Kajen is open from early June through late August.
