The story
Sofiero Slottsrestaurang occupies one of the most storied addresses in southern Sweden. The castle, completed in 1866 and named Sophie-Ro after Princess Sofia, was originally a clergy house that captured the hearts of Oscar II and his princess. Today, the estate draws guests for an entirely different kind of occasion — one that White Guide has recognised at its "very fine level" for the quality of what arrives on the plate.
The setting alone is remarkable. From the glass veranda at the base of the castle, the view stretches through a ravine famous for its rhododendrons, across the Øresund to Kronborg — Hamlet's castle — on the Danish shore. Ships pass slowly in the distance. The parkland presses so close to the windows it almost feels like it grows inside.
At the heart of the operation is Slottsrestaurangen, a gourmet dining room seating just over fifty guests within the castle's historic walls. The kitchen works a modern, creative Swedish cuisine built almost entirely on ingredients sourced within half an hour's drive: lamb from Ängelholm, asparagus from a farm outside Landskrona, potatoes harvested in Viken, beer from a farmhouse brewery outside Eslöv. The menu is seasonal and refreshed often, offered as à la carte or a three-course lunch, Thursday through Saturday.
The estate's second restaurant, Verandan, shares the castle's ground floor and the same unbeatable Øresund panorama. It operates as a bistro — a handful of carefully composed dishes built around whatever the season offers, alongside a more relaxed pace suited to a long lunch or afternoon coffee. Orangeriet, the former greenhouse, takes a lighter approach with pizzas, soups, salads and house-baked pastries, with seating for around eighty inside and as many again outdoors. A garden café in the park rounds out the picture for summer visitors.
The restaurant made international headlines when the Swedish royal couple hosted NATO foreign ministers for a gala dinner at Sofiero — an evening that sold out within two hours and prompted a second sitting to meet demand. It is the kind of moment that speaks to what the place does well: combining a genuinely historic environment with cooking that holds its own on any occasion. Whether it is a private celebration, a wedding, a conference, or simply lunch on a Thursday, Sofiero Slottsrestaurang delivers Swedish cuisine with the weight of a remarkable address behind it.
