The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A Public Hall That Does It All

Zamenhof is one of Göteborg's most ambitious hospitality projects: a sprawling venue on Esperantoplatsen that brings together multiple restaurants, two bars, a game room stocked with pinball machines and arcade cabinets, and on select evenings, round-ping-pong tournaments. It describes itself simply as "All Day Dining, Fancy Dive Bar, BBQ, Pokébowl, Beer, Game Room, Ramen, Brunch, Cocktails, Pinball, High Fives and Friends" — and that breadth is exactly the point.

Café Gazette at the Centre of It All

Within the Zamenhof complex, the culinary focus lands squarely on Café Gazette, which opens onto a large outdoor seating area — one of the more generous terraces in the city. The format here is sharing plates, small and imaginative, designed to slow down a table rather than rush it along. White Guide, which awarded Zamenhof its Fine level recognition in 2026, singled out dishes like squid with kimchi and lobster tail, grilled pork with 'nduja and bean purée, and fried anchovies with tarragon mayonnaise — described simply as "the perfect beer snack." These are dishes with a clear point of view: bold pairings, honest technique, nothing extraneous.

Drinks Worth Staying For

The wine and beer list covers the bases, but it's the cocktails that genuinely distinguish Zamenhof on the drinks side. Wine and mixed drinks are also available on tap as the evening progresses — a detail that fits the venue's easy, convivial spirit. The staff, noted by White Guide as attentive and friendly, carry that spirit through from the first brunch order to the last round of the night.

The Full Experience

What makes Zamenhof singular is what happens after dinner. Guests move naturally from Café Gazette's thoughtful brunch and dinner plates into the deeper reaches of the venue — past the bar, into the flickering light of arcade machines and the clatter of pinball. It draws a young crowd, though the atmosphere is genuinely inclusive: kids are welcome, the space is wheelchair accessible, and the kitchen runs from midday through late evening. Few places in Göteborg manage this range without losing focus — Zamenhof pulls it off.

History

On the record

2026
White Guide — Fine level

Zamenhof consists of three restaurants, two bars, and a large gaming area with pinball and arcade games (and on some evenings even round‑ping‑pong tournaments). All of this is housed in a stylishly decorated venue. Culinary emphasis is placed on Café Gazette, which fronts the large outdoor seating area. Here, small imaginative dishes to share at the table are served, such as squid with kimchi and lobster tail, grilled pork with ’nduja and bean purée, and the perfect beer snack: fried anchovies with tarragon mayonnaise. The wine and beer list does its job, although the cocktails are what really stand out on the drinks side. The staff are attentive and friendly. The clientele is young – and who doesn’t feel young when, after dinner, you wander further into the venue where wine and mixed drinks are on tap and the gaming machines clatter and flash late into the night. Well thought out, Zamenhof!
