The story
The story of Daawat begins in 1971, when the family behind it opened one of the very first Indian restaurants in Sweden. More than fifty years on, that founding ambition — to share the rich, diverse flavors of Indian cuisine with a country that had barely encountered them — still drives everything on the plate. The Masthugget location on Första Långgatan sits a little off the main drag, and the exterior gives nothing away. Yet the dining room is reliably busy, and for good reason.
White Guide, Sweden's most authoritative restaurant guide, put it plainly in its 2026 recommendation: this is not your usual corner Indian joint. The guide singled out a rum-marinated, tandoor-grilled lamb shank whose meat falls from the bone, and fried lobster in a sauce of exceptional depth — dishes that sit alongside what reviewers describe as some of the best Butter Chicken they have encountered anywhere. Every element, from creaminess to heat to acidity, is dialed up with intention and confidence.
The kitchen's philosophy is rooted in the idea that each spice carries its own history. The restaurant traces the lineage of its masala blends to family recipes passed down with the care of something precious — cardamom from Kerala, saffron from Kashmir, pepper that once crossed oceans as currency. That sense of weight and purpose comes through in the cooking: flavors are bold and layered, never timid.
The menu spans classic Indian dishes and regional specialties prepared fresh to order. Street food starters like Papdi Chaat — crispy wafers with potato, red onion, yogurt and chutneys — sit alongside Chicken Lollipop, marinated in garlic, turmeric and chilli. Fragrant vegetarian curries, smoky tandoori grills and biryani round out a range broad enough to reward repeat visits.
What began as a single restaurant has grown to three Göteborg locations — Masthugget, Sisjön and Eriksberg — each maintaining the same approach to authentic Indian cooking. The Masthugget original on Första Långgatan remains the flagship, covered over the years by Göteborgs-Posten, Scan Magazine and the White Guide, and recognized with the LUX Restaurant & Bar Award. Diners consistently note the warmth of the service alongside the food — a combination that has kept the room full for over half a century.
