The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A very particular pizza in a very particular place

Lilla Napoli occupies a compact, container-like building on the outskirts of Falkenberg, Sweden, and it has no interest in pretending to be anything other than what it is: a focused, deeply serious Neapolitan pizza restaurant run by two people who clearly care about every detail. Ville Ilola and Besmir Balaj are the names behind the operation, and their philosophy is refreshingly direct – what they serve is their own interpretation of Pizza Napoletana, not a copy of any single pizzeria in Naples.

The pizza itself

The dough is soft and fluffy, made from bookable batches that guests reserve in advance – you choose your table without specifying when your pizza should arrive, and it comes out at the exact right minute. Organic San Marzano tomatoes form the base, and fresh mozzarella is kneaded on the spot, served only on days when Ville and Besmir judge it to be good enough. When it clears that bar, it becomes an outstanding burrata to start. Shaved truffle makes an occasional appearance on top of the pizza, and the Nutella pizza with ice cream, whipped cream, and fresh berries has become something of a destination dish in its own right.

Wine, atmosphere, and the details that matter

Ville's serious interest in wine translates into a generous by-the-glass selection that ranges from summery Lambrusco to the powerful Taurasi from Campania – a thoughtful range for a pizza restaurant. The atmosphere is easy and fun rather than formal. Recent additions include self-service drinks and an expanded terrace in the parking lot, keeping the experience relaxed and the bill – paid simply via Swish – improbably light.

Recognition that travels

White Guide describes the experience as "the best Neapolitan pizza you can imagine," and Gambero Rosso has awarded Lilla Napoli 2 Slices, the Italian guide's mark of genuine quality. For a small restaurant in a Swedish coastal town to earn recognition from Italy's most respected food publication speaks plainly to what Ilola and Balaj have built here. The restaurant also publishes its own pizza book and a tourist guide to Naples – two details that say everything about how seriously this place takes its craft.

The tension is building. Is it just as heavenly as last time? And the answer is… Yes! In that container-like little building, the best Neapolitan pizza you can imagine is still being crafted. It's fast, it's easy and fun – just book a table without specifying what time your pizza should be ready, and you'll get it at the exact minute! Soft, fluffy doughs with unbeatable organic San Marzano tomatoes, perhaps with the addition of a mountain of shaved truffle? Fresh mozzarella is kneaded on the spot – on the days when, according to Ville Ilola and Besmir Balaj, it's good enough, you can get an unbeatable burrata as a starter. And Ville's great wine interest ensures a generous selection of glasses, from summery Lambrusco to the powerhouse Taurasi from Campania. For dessert, the Nutella pizza with ice cream, whipped cream, and fresh berries – it alone is worth a trip. New this year is self-service drinks, an expanded terrace in the parking lot, and the improbably easy bill being paid with Swish.
