Restaurang Trädgårdsgatan 26

Jonas Åhman's one-man Swedish kitchen in one of Borgholm's oldest houses – a White Guide-recognised feast of flavours on Öland.

The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

The Last House on the Street

At the far end of Trädgårdsgatan, where it meets Badhusgatan in Borgholm, stands one of the oldest preserved buildings in town. Push open the red door with the round window and you step into what the restaurant itself calls den lilla kvarterskrogen – the little neighbourhood restaurant. The setting is intimate almost by design: a compact room, a kitchen no larger than a DJ booth, and a single chef running the entire show.

That chef is Jonas Åhman, and the scale of the operation is precisely what makes it remarkable. White Guide, which has recognised Trädgårdsgatan 26 continuously since naming it one of the Nordic region's 250 best restaurants back in 2015, described Åhman as "gifted with a devilish sense of pitch – something of the food world's Avicii, an impressive one-man orchestra." The 2026 edition goes further, noting that delivering a visually striking, flavour-rich three-course dinner with two main-course options to a room of guests, alone, is nothing short of a masterpiece of planning and execution.

A Weekly Menu, Constantly Moving

The menu rotates every two weeks – two courses swapped out at a time – so regulars always find something new. The philosophy is straightforward: only the best ingredients, sourced both from the island of Öland and further afield, in service of an evening that is memorable for food, drink and hospitality in equal measure.

A recent menu illustrates the range well. A warm squid salad opens, dressed with nduja, toasted pine nuts and artichoke. For the main, guests choose between a pan-seared Arctic char fillet with parsley root purée, lemon sabayon, roasted quinoa and sautéed asparagus, or a pluma cut of Ibérico Bellota pork served with crushed fried potatoes, grilled peppers, cherry tomatoes, roasted onion emulsion and herb salsa. Dessert brings a deconstructed Eton Mess – broken meringue, strawberries, lime, caramel sauce, liquorice, mascarpone and flaked almonds. A three-wine pairing is available alongside the three-course menu, and the weekly digestif rounds things off in style.

Recognition Built Over a Decade

The track record here is long and consistent. Trädgårdsgatan 26 held its place in the White Guide Nordic list throughout the years it was published, was nominated for Årets Hjärtekrog (Restaurant of the Heart) in 2019/20, and has held the number-one spot on TripAdvisor for restaurants on Öland for eleven consecutive years. The 2026 Falstaff Restaurant & Bistro Guide Nordics added 89 points and two forks to the tally.

This is Swedish fine dining at its most personal – one chef, one kitchen, one unwavering standard.

How does one serve a three‑course meal with two main‑course options to 16 guests using only one chef? Preparation is everything, and Jonas Åhman is the emperor of planning. That he manages to deliver this visually appealing feast of flavors is a masterpiece.
