The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A Farm with Many Lives

In Västra Sörby, about a mile south of Borgholm on the island of Öland, Kackelstugan occupies a former chicken farm that has been quietly reinventing itself since 1987. The name, the art gallery called "Galeriet," and the decor all nod to that poultry past — roosters and hens appear at every turn — but what draws people here today is a combination that is genuinely hard to find in one place: a well-regarded restaurant, an on-site microbrewery, live concerts in the barn, and rooms for the night.

The Kitchen and the Brewery

The restaurant works with rustic flavors and island-sourced ingredients wherever possible. White Guide, which has recommended Kackelstugan, singled out dishes like pan-fried pilgrim mussels in seafood broth and chicken ballotine with dragon mayo as examples of a kitchen that has grown in ambition without losing its grounded, farmhouse character. The food is straightforward and honest — exactly what the setting calls for.

The microbrewery, Kackelbryggeriet, started production in 2014 and is now a destination in its own right. The beers are brewed in the stone barn across the road and served on tap or by the bottle in the restaurant. The ÖPA — Ölandic Pale Ale, at 4.9% — is a particular standout, an American-style pale ale with notes of grapefruit and crispbread. Other house brews include the Nightingale IPA, named after Öland's emblematic bird, and the Kackeloni Lager, brewed in an Italian style with herbs and citrus. Alongside the beer, the team produces their own soft drinks under the Sodaverket label — :Orange, Kackelsoda, R:ose Mild Tonic — available to take home.

More Than a Meal

On summer evenings the old barn becomes a concert venue, with a full lineup of Swedish artists performing through July and into August. The peaceful farm atmosphere that White Guide noted is real: you can walk through the art gallery before dinner, sit outside, and let the evening unfold at its own pace. Bed and breakfast accommodation is available from May through September, making Kackelstugan a natural base for exploring Öland's nature and history.

You’rein Västra Sörby, about a mile south of Borgholm, where Kackelstugan is a popular outing destination for both locals and summer guests. Before the meal you can take a walk through the art gallery—here it’s called “Galeriet” because everything points to chickens and roosters in the former chicken farm. In pandemic‑free summers there are full shows with various artists every evening in the barn, but summer 2020 is quieter. Kackelstugan has its own microbrewery and soft‑drink production; we especially recommend a glass of ÖPA – Ölandic Pale Ale. The kitchen is newly built and the menu upgraded, for example with pan‑fried pilgrim mussels in seafood broth as a starter and chicken ballotine with dragon mayo as the main course. It tastes great and we enjoy the peaceful farm atmosphere.
