The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A Former Telephone Exchange, Now a Gathering Place

On Borgholm Square, between the retro-charming signs of Ölandsbladet and the stone-arched gateway of what was once a telephone exchange, Gamla Televerket Vin & Bistro has carved out something genuinely hard to find: a place that feels like a proper neighbourhood pub without sacrificing the quality of what's in the glass or on the plate. The White Guide recognised it at Fine level in 2026, a nod to exactly that balance.

Wine at the Heart of It

Step inside the snug little room and the first thing you see is rows of wine bottles lining the bar — because wine is, plainly, the point here. A large portion of the extensive list is available by the glass, which means you can slide in for a single pour without committing to a bottle. The fully stocked bar anchors the space, and the atmosphere is relaxed enough that doing exactly that feels entirely natural.

Short Menu, Honest Craft

The food menu is short, which in this case is a strength. Dishes are uncomplicated but carefully made — pan-seared char, for instance, arrives with crispy skin, smoked trout roe, browned butter, and lemon-baked fennel: simple components treated with real attention. Cheeses and meat are sourced from Öland producers, and the beer pours from Kalmar — a quietly regional sensibility that runs through everything without being announced.

The Courtyard in Summer

When the weather allows, tables spill out along the stone wall into a rustic courtyard, where an outdoor bar makes the setting even more appealing. It's the kind of spot that rewards a long, unhurried afternoon as much as a quick stop between errands.

White Guide — Fine level

On Borgholm Square, between Ölandsbladet’s retro‑charming signs and what was once a telephone exchange, a cozy little bistro welcomes you with personal service and great neighborhood‑pub charm. The entrance is through a stone‑arched gateway, and in summer the tables wind along the stone wall into the rustic courtyard—complete with a fine outdoor bar. In true “slide‑in‑for‑a‑glass” style, a large portion of the extensive wine list is served by the glass, and it’s the fully stocked bar with rows of wine bottles that dominates the view in the snug little space. The menu is short but full of well‑made, uncomplicated dishes, such as pan‑seared char with salt, crispy skin, smoked trout roe, browned butter and lemon‑baked fennel. Both the cheeses and the meat come from Öland suppliers, and the beer is from Kalmar.
