Celebrated table

Elise

A little red cottage 150 metres from the sea on Öland, serving bold small plates with global twists. Recommended by the White Guide 2026.

The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A red cottage by the Kalmarsund

Elise sits in Djupvik, a small coastal spot on Öland roughly 20 kilometres north of Borgholm. The restaurant occupies a little red cottage with a generous outdoor terrace, and the water is literally 150 metres away. Sunsets over the Kalmarsund have earned a reputation of their own, and the White Guide 2026 called the view and location "nothing short of breathtaking" when it awarded Elise its recommendation.

The food: familiar flavours, modern twists

The menu is built around medium-sized sharing plates — what the team calls mellanrätter — designed to be passed around the table. The philosophy is straightforward: take good ingredients, apply a modern hand, and keep the joy of eating at the centre of every dish. The result is a Swedish kitchen that borrows freely from other culinary traditions without losing its footing.

The White Guide singled out a coconut stew that pairs cauliflower with crispy beans and sesame seeds in a deep bowl — tart, hot, and deeply savoury — alongside panko-fried chicken in a tortilla finished with generous coriander. Playful flavour combinations and confident technique run through the whole menu. Vegetarian and vegan options are woven in as a matter of course, and the kitchen takes allergen management seriously, so the table rarely has to negotiate around restrictions.

The drinks list keeps pace: an evening cocktail of apple and mint arrives cold and invigorating, exactly what the setting calls for.

Atmosphere and setting

The White Guide noted swift service and a pace that keeps the table lively rather than rushed. Elise draws both islanders and summer visitors, and the outdoor seating fills naturally with people coming off the beach. For cyclists and walkers following the coastal path between Äleklinta and Sandvik, the terrace is a well-earned stop.

Elise operates seasonally, typically opening around midsummer week and closing at the end of the summer season — a rhythm that suits Öland's character entirely.

The view and location are nothing short of breathtaking. Just a few hundred meters from the shoreline and the open sea lies the little red cottage with its large outdoor seating area. The atmosphere is top‑notch, the service is swift, and the medium‑sized dishes arrive at a rapid pace. There are many crowd‑pleasers featuring playful flavor combinations, showy techniques, and influences from every corner of the world. In addition, the menu takes great care to accommodate allergens, so everyone can find something they like (even though the plate’s contents don’t always match what’s listed on the menu). Tart and hot, the coconut stew has cauliflower mingling with crispy beans and sesame seeds in a deep bowl, while on another plate generous amounts of coriander top a panko‑fried chicken in a tortilla. The drinks menu also has something for most people; the evening cocktail with apple and mint is icy, invigorating, and fresh in the summer sun.
