Barbord Kök & Bar

Barbord Kök & Bar in Arvika earned White Guide recognition for its waterside setting, slow-cooked meats and welcoming mix of locals and visitors.

The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A Värmland Institution by Kyrkviken

For fifteen years, Barbord Kök & Bar held a quiet but firm place on Arvika's dining scene, drawing locals from Värmland alongside Norwegians and Swedes from across the country to its spot beside Kyrkviken. The gentle lap of water against the pier set the tone — unhurried, convivial, unpretentious — and the food delivered on that promise with confidence.

Meat at the Centre, Done with Patience

White Guide recognised Barbord for exactly the kind of cooking that earns loyalty over time. The menu leaned decisively toward meat: beef tenderloin served either raw or gently baked, and a lamb shank left in the oven through the night — the kind of dish that rewards slow time and good sourcing. Alongside these anchors, the kitchen offered a lunch that balanced vegetarian options with more classic plates, making the restaurant genuinely accessible across the day and across different appetites. A short, well-edited wine list completed the picture without overcomplicating it.

Fifteen Years, Then a Graceful Exit

In their own words, owners Morgan and Jessica chose to close "at the top" — a fully booked final service, surrounded by guests who had followed them through the years. "We are enormously grateful for all the memories, meetings and moments created over the years," they wrote. It is a rare thing for a restaurant to close on its own terms, with a full house and genuine warmth rather than a slow fade. That Barbord managed it speaks to what it built: not just a menu, but a place people wanted to return to.

The White Guide's recommendation, with its note of waves lapping at the pier and a room full of cross-border regulars, captures what Barbord Kök & Bar was at its best — a meat-forward kitchen with real soul, in a small Swedish city that deserved exactly that.

The waves gently lap against the pier, creating a peaceful atmosphere both inside and out. The people from Värmland mingle with Norwegians and festive Swedes from other parts of the country. Despite the location by Kyrkviken, meat dominates the menu. The beef tenderloin can be served raw or gently baked, while the lamb shank is baked all night. Lunch is quite pleasant with several options, both vegetarian and classic. A short but concise wine list.
