Celebrated table

Granen

A century-old mountain hotel in Åre with a White Guide-recognised restaurant: relaxed alpine atmosphere, knowledgeable service, and serious wine.

The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

For Skiers, By Skiers – Since 1916

Up the slope from Åre's village square, where the air is a little clearer and the pace a little slower, sits Hotel Granen. The hotel has been welcoming guests since 1916 – a century-long run built on a simple conviction: the people who best understand what a skier needs after a long day in the mountains are skiers themselves. That ethos runs through everything here, from the insider knowledge the staff share about the terrain to the armchair and open fire waiting when you return with rosy cheeks and tired legs.

The Restaurant

The dining room is generous in size yet manages to feel genuinely cosy. Roughly hewn wooden furniture of varying heights and designs gives the space an unhurried, alpine-cottage character, and even when the room is full, the noise stays at a pleasant murmur. Service is knowledgeable and efficient – food and drink are recommended and described in detail, and dishes arrive with precise timing. In winter, the fireplace draws guests in; in summer, the outdoor terrace takes over.

It is exactly this combination – relaxed atmosphere, serious hospitality, and careful attention to what arrives on the table – that earned Granen recognition in the White Guide at Fine level. The guide singled out the restaurant as a place where hotel guests, locals, and food-and-wine enthusiasts alike feel equally at ease.

Wine at the Heart of It

Wine is clearly a passion here. The restaurant has hosted winemaker dinners during the Åre Wine Festival, including an evening with producer Marco Fay presenting his high-altitude Nebbiolo across a five-course meal – the kind of event that sells out immediately and speaks to a crowd that takes the glass as seriously as the plate. Popular wine Fridays are a regular fixture on the calendar, and an updated cocktail list rounds out the drinks offering.

Granen is open year-round, sitting at the point where Jämtland's mountains meet the village – close enough to everything, far enough up the hill to feel like a proper escape.

White Guide — Fine level

When you have hiked forward-leaning, sometimes slipping with life at stake, from the square up along the mountain track, you have earned a ice‑cold Birra Poretti. Wintertime by the fireplace, summertime on the outdoor terrace. Hotel guests, villagers and other food‑ and wine‑enthusiasts appreciate the relaxed, elegant alpine‑cottage atmosphere. The dining room is large but cozy, furnished with roughly hewn wooden furniture of varying heights and designs, and despite many guests, only a pleasant murmur can be heard. The service is knowledgeable and efficient; food and drink are recommended and presented in detail, arriving with pinpoint timing.
