The story
Fäviken is a farm set in the remote landscape of Jämtland, in northern Sweden, positioned between the mountain Åreskutan and the cold, deep waters of Kallsjön. It is a place shaped by its surroundings — by foraging, by Swedish nature, by a commitment to local produce and craftsmanship that ran through everything the family behind it chose to do.
The restaurant Fäviken Magasinet operated from this farm for years as one of the most singular dining experiences in the world. At its peak, it climbed as high as 19th on the World's 50 Best Restaurants list, appearing in the ranking across multiple consecutive years — a remarkable achievement for a restaurant so deliberately removed from any urban dining scene. That kind of sustained international recognition reflected something real: a New Nordic kitchen that was not performing rurality but actually living it, on a working farm far from the nearest city.
The ethos was consistent and uncompromising. Local meat, foraged ingredients, the rhythms of the Swedish landscape — these were not talking points but the actual logic of the menu. The farm and the kitchen were inseparable. Guests who made the journey to Järpen were not just coming for a meal; they were entering a specific world with its own rules and its own integrity.
Fäviken Magasinet closed in 2019. The restaurant no longer operates on a regular basis, though it remains available for private bookings on special occasions. The farm itself continues, and the family is channeling the same ethos into new directions: a charcuterie operation using local Jämtland meat, and an eco-luxury line of skincare and scents made with ingredients from Fäviken. The farm is not open to the public.
For those who experienced it, Fäviken Magasinet remains one of the defining expressions of New Nordic cuisine — a restaurant that made its remoteness the point.
