The story
Buustamons Fjällgård sits in ski-in position between Rödkullen and Ullådalen in Åre, and getting there is part of the experience. In winter, when the road closes, the last ten minutes are covered by tracked vehicle — and if that breaks down, a snowmobile sled takes over. In summer, guests swim in a mountain stream before sitting down to dinner. Neither version of the trip disappoints.
Inside, the setting is exactly what the surroundings call for: heavy timber construction, crackling fire, rag rugs underfoot, and a warmth that has nothing to do with interior design trends. This is a place built around the idea that food and shelter in the mountains should feel genuinely restorative.
The evening menu draws directly from the landscape and local producers. A seared beef tartare from cattle raised in Hallen might open the meal, followed by Arctic char or reindeer served with mushrooms and seasonal vegetables. The wine list is classical and carefully chosen — nothing showy, everything considered. Swedish cuisine here means produce with a postcode, prepared without unnecessary complication.
Lunch and afternoon service run as drop-in, with waffles, light bites, and bar snacks available through the afternoon. Evening sittings require a reservation, and the restaurant offers several menu formats — including a relaxed option and a distillery menu — suited to different kinds of evenings. Groups of more than twelve are asked to book directly.
White Guide has long recognised Buustamons Fjällgård as one of Åre's standout dining destinations, noting its combination of atmosphere, honest Swedish cooking, and the sheer completeness of the mountain experience it delivers. The lodge also operates as an award-winning hotel, so dinner and a night's stay can be arranged together — booking well ahead is advisable for both.
One practical note the guides pass along: bring warm clothes for the tracked-vehicle transfer. The mountain does not make exceptions.
