The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A Meeting Place on Monte Igeldo

At the foot of Monte Igeldo, with the bay of Donostia spread out below, Restaurante Rekondo has long drawn guests from across the world to one of the Basque Country's most distinctive dining addresses. The restaurant's own description says it best: "around a table, a hearth or embers, time passes at Rekondo" — an evocative phrase that captures the unhurried, convivial spirit of the place. Lunch and dinner here are not transactions; they are occasions.

The Kitchen: Product Above All

The cooking at Rekondo is rooted in a clear philosophy — the ingredient is the protagonist. The kitchen aims to be "respectful of products and faithful to their flavours," a discipline that aligns naturally with the Basque tradition of letting exceptional raw materials speak for themselves. There are no elaborate disguises on the plate; what arrives at the table reflects what the season and the region offer at their best.

La Bodega: One of the World's Finest Wine Cellars

The wine cellar is, by any measure, extraordinary. Wine Spectator recognised it with its prestigious Grand Award — one of the most demanding distinctions in the world of wine — a fitting acknowledgement of a collection the restaurant itself describes as "one of the best wine cellars in the world." For serious wine lovers, a meal at Rekondo is as much about what is poured as what is plated.

Setting and Atmosphere

The terrace, available from early July through October, adds an outdoor dimension that has earned its own recognition. The views over the bay of San Sebastián make it one of the more memorable places to sit in the city. Inside, the atmosphere is that of a fine dining room with genuine warmth — smart but not stiff, with a dress code that simply asks guests to leave the beach behind.

Rekondo appears in both the Michelin Guide and the Macarfi Guide, and its combination of serious cooking, an unrivalled cellar and a singular hillside setting makes it a compelling destination for anyone who takes the table seriously.
