The story
In Roman times, a villa was a large house with a courtyard — a place where families, friends and businessmen gathered to share meals, drink wine and celebrate life. That spirit is precisely what Villa 47 has brought to a heritage building at 47 Bree Street in the heart of Cape Town. Recognised with a fork by Gambero Rosso, Italy's most authoritative food guide, the restaurant has earned its place among the city's most credible Italian dining addresses.
The philosophy here is straightforward: Italian tradition with a modern, local touch. Every dish is prepared with what the kitchen describes as "abundance, consistency and passion," drawing on quality sourced ingredients. It's an Italian restaurant that takes its reference point seriously without becoming rigid about it.
Villa 47 runs from early morning through to the evening, covering more ground than most. Weekday breakfasts begin at 7 am with a quick caffé e cornetto or a more leisurely eggs Benedict. Lunch and dinner bring pastasciutta — proper pasta dishes — alongside seared tuna and a wine list that the house cheerfully refuses to count.
The courtyard and cocktail bar are where the Italian ritual of aperitivo takes shape: Aperol Spritz, cold meats and cheese, friends unwinding after work. It's also the setting for occasional evenings of music and dancing.
The ground floor holds the main dining room, with an open kitchen and street-side seating for up to 85. Upstairs, a more intimate dining room with a private bar seats 55. Through the main dining area, the courtyard and cocktail bar adds another 55 seated places — making the full building capable of hosting up to 150 standing for private events. Birthdays, wedding receptions, corporate functions and boardroom meetings are all catered for, with a dedicated events brochure available on request.
A tavola non si invecchia mai. At the table, one does not grow old. Villa 47 takes that seriously.
