Karibu — the Swahili word for "welcome" — sets the tone from the moment you arrive. Positioned at The Wharf Centre in Cape Town's V&A Waterfront, the restaurant frames views of Table Mountain on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other, placing the drama of the landscape firmly in the dining room. The atmosphere blends what the restaurant describes as "the ruggedness of Africa within a luxurious setting," where African ambiance meets the flavours of South Africa's rich and diverse cultural heritage.

A Menu Rooted in South African Tradition

The kitchen's approach to South African cuisine is both broad and deeply rooted. Chefs draw on "the organic fragrances of the veld," working through a menu that spans succulent steaks, fresh seafood, and Cape Malay classics alongside traditional favourites — boboitie, potjiekos, snoekbraai, putu, chakalaka, and koeksisters among them. One of the restaurant's signatures is its open-fire braaivleis: prime cuts of meat, fish, and poultry grilled over live coals in full view of the dining room, a distinctly South African theatre that gives the meal its character.

The menu covers the full arc of a meal — starters, soups, salads, venison, bredies, shellfish, seafood platters, and dessert — making it a genuine survey of what the country's larder has to offer.

Wine, Recognition, and a Consistent Track Record

The wine list has earned Karibu the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence for 2025, recognising a selection that leans into South Africa's award-winning wine regions, with a strong offering available by the glass. Cocktails are also part of the picture, rounding out a drinks programme built for a long, relaxed evening.

The recognition extends further. Karibu has taken home World Luxury Restaurant Awards for Best South African Cuisine on the continent — with wins recorded in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2021 — and has received Haute Grandeur Global Awards across multiple years. In 2025, TripAdvisor's Travelers' Choice Best of the Best designation placed it among fewer than 1% of the platform's eight million listings.
