The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

Where Africa Meets Japan, Five Floors Above Cape Town

Named after fynbos — the extraordinarily biodiverse plant kingdom unique to South Africa's Cape region — FYN is a restaurant that wears its identity with quiet confidence. Perched on the 5th floor of Speaker's Corner in the heart of Cape Town's city centre, the space is suspended, quite literally, between two worlds: the vibrant pulse of the city below and an atmosphere of deliberate, almost meditative calm above.

The restaurant's own ethos says it best: "A restaurant on the edge; driven by passion, tempered by precision."

The Minds Behind the Menu

FYN was conceived and is led by chef founder Peter Tempelhoff, whose vision shapes every plate that leaves the kitchen. Alongside him, Ashley Moss serves as culinary director, while Jennifer Hugé oversees the sommelier and service programme — together forming a trio whose shared dedication to detail defines the FYN experience.

Their modern African cuisine draws deeply from Japan's culinary philosophy: seasonal, restrained, and utterly respectful of each ingredient's inherent character. The result is a menu that reads as an emotive reflection of land and sea — tastes, textures, and memories rendered in course after course.

An Experience Menu Rooted in Place

The signature Experience Menu is a journey through the landscapes surrounding Cape Town. Highlights include Cape Point Tuna Fin-to-Tail, KZN Langoustine with Plankton, Springbok and Ostrich from the wild African interior, and Wagyu with Garlic Buchu and Cepes from the Cape Farms. Sea Plants — Kelp & Abalone, Sea Lettuce & Octopus — speak to the cold Atlantic on the doorstep, while desserts of Honey, Amazake, and Stone Fruit bring the journey to a graceful close.

The modern African cuisine extends to a dedicated Pescatarian menu featuring West Coast specialities such as Snoek and False Bay Dusky Kob, ensuring every guest finds their place at the table. Wine pairings — from the South African Terroir Pairing to the prestigious Cellar and Rarities Pairing — are curated to match the ambition of the food.

Globally Acclaimed

FYN's approach has earned recognition at the very highest level. The World's 50 Best Restaurants has ranked FYN continuously since 2021, placing it 37th in the world and best restaurant in Africa in 2022, and honouring it with the Flor de Caña Sustainable Restaurant Award in 2023. Most recently, FYN was placed 82nd in the world in 2025 — a testament to a kitchen that never stands still.

A Space of Quiet Contrasts

The room itself embodies the philosophy within: dark meets light, expansive yet intimate, raw and refined. It is a setting designed not merely to impress, but to hold the full weight of the experience it frames — the ideal stage for modern African cuisine at its most courageous.
