The story
On Liteyny Avenue, in the heart of Saint Petersburg, Il Milanese makes a quiet but confident case: you don't need to fly to Italy to eat like you're there. The restaurant was founded by Marco, a native Milanese, whose motivation was as simple as it was sincere — a genuine love for Italian cuisine and the desire to bring it to Russia's northern capital without compromise.
Step through the door and the atmosphere shifts. Soft, sun-warmed Italian melodies carry the character of Venice, Lombardy and Tuscany. The walls are hung with specially commissioned reproductions of Caravaggio's paintings. The owner himself may well be the one to greet you — that kind of personal welcome is, as the restaurant puts it, simply how things are done in Italy.
Il Milanese describes its approach with refreshing directness: natural ingredients, elegantly simple cooking. Tomatoes, cheese, fragrant olive oil, olives, garlic, capers, mushrooms — these are the building blocks of a menu rooted in Italian classics and family recipes. It is precisely this kind of honest, unfussy cooking that has made Italian cuisine one of the world's most admired, and it is what Marco has brought to Saint Petersburg.
That commitment to authenticity earned Il Milanese a place on Gambero Rosso's list of the best Italian restaurants outside Italy — a distinction awarded by one of Italy's most respected food guides, and a meaningful measure of how seriously the kitchen takes its craft.
Beyond daily dining, Il Milanese is equipped for private events — intimate dinners for up to 22 guests, weddings for up to 30, and receptions for up to 42. Whether a quiet evening or a celebration, the warmth of the setting carries through.
