The story
In 1944, three young brothers — Giacinto, Varese, and Alvaro Cristiani — arrived in Rome at the height of the Second World War, carrying little more than a passion for the cooking of their native Tuscany and a determination to build something lasting. What they built was Fiammetta, a family restaurant that has been running for over 78 years without ever changing hands or losing its founding spirit.
That same spirit now has a Lisbon address. Fiammetta's Campo de Ourique outpost brings together a restaurant and a gourmet deli under one roof, proudly carrying forward the values of those three founders across geographic boundaries. The result is a space that draws nostalgic palates, curious travellers, and loyal regulars in equal measure — a meeting point rather than a destination designed to impress.
At its core, Fiammetta is a careful exercise in Italian authenticity. The deli stocks a curated selection of Italian products sourced exclusively from artisan producers, chosen for their craft rather than their scale. The wine cellar follows the same logic: months of research and tasting led to a list built around small producers, natural and biodynamic wines, and bottles with a story to tell. As the team puts it, "we love the wines we sell and we sell the wines we love" — wines defined by acidity, character, and drinkability rather than by label recognition.
The space also operates as a cafeteria, offers catering, and handles private events — a full-service Italian address that goes well beyond a single meal.
Gambero Rosso, Italy's most authoritative food and wine guide, awarded Fiammetta 2 Forks — a recognition that carries particular weight for an Italian restaurant operating abroad. It speaks to the consistency and integrity with which this family-run spot maintains its standards, far from its Roman origins but close to its Tuscan soul.
