The story
Nestled in the historic Chiado neighbourhood, Belcanto carries a story that stretches back to 1958, when the building first opened its doors as a distinguished men's club. More than half a century later, chef José Avillez breathed new life into the space in 2012, transforming it into what has since become widely regarded as the finest restaurant in Portugal. In 2019, the restaurant moved into expanded premises next door — a bold step forward that matched the ambition of the cuisine being served within.
Considered one of the great references of contemporary Portuguese cuisine, José Avillez is an entrepreneur at heart, driven by an unrelenting desire to go further. A well-known face on Portuguese television through his cooking show Improbabilicious, he has also authored four cookbooks and developed his own wine vintages under the JA line in collaboration with Quinta do Monte D'Oiro winery. At Belcanto, his philosophy is clear: "A cozinha é o nosso fado, a nossa forma de expressão" — the kitchen is our fado, our form of expression. Alongside him, a talented team including Chefs de Cuisine João Leitão and Miguel Gomes, Pastry Chef Américo dos Santos, and Director and Head Sommelier Nádia Desidério brings this vision to life every day.
Up to 45 guests are welcomed beneath vaulted ceilings and minimalist chandeliers, with natural light streaming through tall windows — a setting that bridges the romanticism of old Lisbon with a confident gaze toward the future. Diners may choose between two tasting menus or an à la carte selection, always preceded by petiscos and concluded with petit-fours. Every plate is a celebration of contemporary Portuguese cuisine, drawing on the country's diverse regions and exceptional produce.
Standout dishes include cured and smoked red mullet with Algarve carrot and parsley emulsion, matured beef sirloin with onion tart and almond spread, and the whimsically named The Garden of the Goose that Laid the Golden Eggs — egg with crunchy bread and mushrooms. From the sea, scarlet shrimp arrives with green curry, sprouts and apple. For those seeking an immersive experience, the chef's table offers a ringside view of the kitchen.
Belcanto's wine list is as carefully curated as the food, with over 350 references spanning sparkling wines, Champagnes, whites, reds, late harvests, Ports and Madeiras. Around 80% of the selection is Portuguese, showcasing the country's finest producers alongside celebrated international labels — including rare vintages and collector's treasures.
Belcanto holds two Michelin stars, three Repsol Suns, and has featured consistently in The World's 50 Best Restaurants, most recently ranked 42nd in 2025. These accolades reflect not only the quality of the contemporary Portuguese cuisine on the plate, but the warmth, discretion and genuine care that define every visit.
