Smak Tromsø

Husband-and-wife team Espen and Eva-Linda Ramnestedt celebrate Arctic ingredients at this White Guide Masters-level restaurant in Tromsø.

The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A Labor of Love at 69° North

Restaurant Smak is the creation of Espen and Eva-Linda Ramnestedt, a husband-and-wife team who have built something quietly exceptional on the Kræmerkaia waterfront in Tromsø. Espen leads the kitchen; Eva-Linda commands the dining room. Together, they have shaped a fine dining experience that is as much about place as it is about plate — a sincere celebration of northern Norwegian ingredients served in what they describe as a warm and intimate atmosphere.

The White Guide recognized Smak at its Masters level for 2026, noting that the restaurant "builds on the area's heritage while simultaneously pushing the local gastronomy forward." That tension between tradition and invention is the engine of everything here.

Seasons as the Menu

Above the Arctic Circle, the growing season is short and the winters are long. Smak's menus follow the rhythm of the region without apology. Produce comes from the sea, from local farms, and from a small circle of producers who share the Ramnestedts' vision. When fresh ingredients are scarce, curing, drying, and fermenting bridge the gap — preservation techniques that are themselves part of northern Norway's food heritage, now applied with a modern precision.

Each meal begins with a series of small courses, and the kitchen's philosophy is to use the whole ingredient, wasting nothing. A new dessert on the menu pays homage to the traditional Norwegian krumkake, a detail that speaks to how seriously Smak takes its roots.

Recognition and Atmosphere

Alongside the White Guide's Masters distinction, critics have called Smak "Tromsø's finest food experience" and praised its wine list as reason enough to make the trip north. The dining room at Kræmerkaia offers an unhurried, grounded setting — what the Ramnestedts call a jordnær og lun (down-to-earth and cozy) space, where the focus stays on the food and the company.

For anyone traveling to Tromsø — whether under the midnight sun or the northern lights — a table at Smak offers a direct line to the gastronomic heart of the region.

History

On the record

2026
White Guide — Masters level

Tromsø is one of northern Norway’s most enchanted places, a town of charm, attitude and breathtaking landscapes. The glory of the midnight sun in summer and nature’s own Technicolor spectacle, the northern lights in winter, and one of the region’s best restaurants, one that builds on the area’s heritage while simultaneously pushing the local gastronomy forward. Smak is husband- and wife team Espen and Eva-Linda Ramnestedt’s stroke of genius; she reigns over the front of house, he manages the kitchen. Theirs is a labor of love, dedicating their time to collecting the scant produce that the short seasons provide, and working with the few farmers who understand their vision. Needless to say, curing, drying and fermenting things bridges the gap between long winter and short summer.
