The story
Gaffel & Karaffel occupies four floors on Øvre Holmegate in the heart of Stavanger, offering everything from an intimate wine bar to a grand celebration hall — all under one roof. The venue earned a Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence in 2014, a recognition that speaks to the seriousness with which the team approaches its wine list, and more recently scored 90 points in Falstaff 2026. Both distinctions reflect a place that has built genuine credibility over time.
The kitchen leans into a convivial, sharing-plate philosophy that suits the venue's social character. The menu reads as confidently Scandinavian in its sourcing — burrata made with South Norwegian milk, persetorsk (cured pressed cod) served with green pea purée and trout roe, and brown cheese ice cream for dessert — while drawing freely from broader European and Asian influences. Grilled scallops with parsley purée, tuna tataki with kimchi mayo and wakame, and fried bao buns with scampi sit alongside a 250g sirloin and a lamb rump with cranberry jam.
For those who want the full picture without deliberating over the menu, the kitchen offers "Sharing is Caring" — a curated selection of the team's favourite dishes, designed for the whole table and priced at 795 NOK per person. It is, as they put it, the best way to experience what Gaffel & Karaffel does.
The drinks list is as considered as the food. Wines by the glass span Cava, Crémant, Champagne, Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Barbera, alongside local Lervig beers brewed in Stavanger. The cocktail menu carries its own personality — the Mafioso (Campari, vermouth rosso, prosecco) and the Mo i knærne (gin, cranberry syrup, ginger beer) are good indicators of the tone: playful names, properly made drinks.
Beyond the main restaurant, Gaffel & Karaffel runs six distinct private spaces — Vinbaren, Festsalen, Bakrommet, Mafiabordet, Krystall and Restauranten — accommodating groups from 16 up to 200 guests. The venue handles weddings, corporate dinners, wine tastings, Christmas parties and confirmations, with a rental fee of 100 NOK per person that includes waitstaff, table setting and technical equipment. It is one of the more complete event addresses in Stavanger, and the Norwegian-Scandinavian kitchen scales accordingly.
