The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

Where craft tradition meets the grill

At Verksgata 7 in Stavanger, A. Idsøe grill & berkel is built around a simple but exacting promise: every visit, whether a Tuesday lunch or a Saturday evening, will be rooted in solid craft traditions and genuine love of ingredients. The atmosphere the restaurant describes as "uformell" — informal, unpretentious — is the point, not an afterthought. The sizzle of meat on the grill, the clink of glasses, the particular quiet of someone tasting something exceptional: these are the sensory coordinates of the place.

French-Norwegian at its most direct

The menu reads as a confident expression of French-Norwegian cooking — charcuterie boards, biff tartar, lobster in a hot dog bun, and turbot (piggvar) paired with guanciale, hazelnut, capers and cauliflower. Local sourcing is woven throughout: entrecôte from Jæren, tomatoes from Hanasand, vegetables from Brimse. Alongside these Norwegian references sit Pata Negra Bellota aged up to 52 months, 24-month Parma ham, and wagyu A5+ from Kagoshima — a range that signals serious sourcing without self-congratulation.

The evening sharing menu — a three-course format for a minimum of two — anchors around charcuterie to start, a cut of the day served with bone marrow, pommes frites, Béarnaise and corn stew, followed by dessert. A lobster course can be added, and a wine pairing by the glass is offered for both formats.

The wine list

Wine Spectator's Best of Award of Excellence for 2025 is the kind of recognition that speaks to depth and curation. The restaurant's own drinks menu promises a strong selection across cocktails, beer and wine — and the award confirms that the wine programme is operating at a level well above the average Stavanger dining room. For a restaurant that also runs a butcher shop and a workshop under the same Idsøe name, that level of commitment to the glass is a meaningful statement.

Lunch without compromise

The midday menu holds its own: smoked salmon with horseradish and ramsons, parmesan soup with white beans and bacon, sourdough with Prague ham and Gruyère, and turbot for those who want the full French-Norwegian experience at noon. It is a lunch offer that takes the meal seriously.
