Statholdergaarden

Bocuse d'Or winner Bent Stiansen's Oslo institution: regal rooms, seasonal Norwegian cuisine, and a Michelin star held since 1998.

The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A Quarter-Century of Excellence in Oslo's Old Town

Statholdergaarden occupies a landmarked building dating to the 1640s on Rådhusgata, and the setting alone signals that something serious is happening inside. The dining rooms are regal — long tablecloths reaching the dark hardwood floors, guests dressed accordingly — and the atmosphere is one of considered celebration rather than casual grazing. This is where Oslo comes for the occasions that matter.

The restaurant has held a Michelin star continuously since 1998, a tenure that speaks louder than any single accolade. White Guide's Masters level recognition describes it plainly: "pomp at its best." Behind that consistency is Bocuse d'Or winner Bent Stiansen, who has shaped the kitchen's identity for over twenty-five years, making Statholdergaarden the city's definitive address for fine dining.

The Kitchen Today

At the stoves now, Torbjørn Forster and head chef Joachim Lindgren compose tasting menus that shift with the seasons. The guiding principle is straightforward: Norwegian produce, used when it is at its peak. The menu changes to reflect what the landscape and the sea are offering at any given moment, so no two visits are quite alike.

Who It's For

Statholdergaarden suits anyone who wants the full formal experience — private rooms are available for groups, and the service is table-side throughout. Vegetarian guests are accommodated. The restaurant opens Monday through Saturday from 18:00, closed Sundays, public holidays, the Christmas week, Easter, and three weeks in summer.
