Celebrated table

SentralenMat

SentralenMat brings vegetable-forward shared plates and a rooftop terrace to Oslo's beautifully restored former bank building at Øvre Slottsgate 3.

The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A Former Bank Vault, Now a Gathering Place

At Øvre Slottsgate 3 in central Oslo, a grand old savings bank has been transformed into something altogether more alive. The Savings Bank Foundation DNB converted the building into Sentralen — a hub for culture, innovation, meeting spaces, and concert halls — and at its heart, a place to eat and drink well. The food operation is run by restaurant group Lava, and the result is a venue that draws an impressively mixed crowd: conference delegates, curious locals, and nervous young couples bringing a partner home to meet the family for the first time.

What's on the Plate

The menu leans heavily on vegetables, offered as shareable dishes designed for the table rather than the individual. It is the kind of eating that encourages lingering — passing plates, refilling glasses, staying longer than planned. White Guide, which awarded SentralenMat its "Very Fine Level" recognition for 2026, noted the vegetable-heavy, sharing-style format as a defining characteristic of the experience.

The Spaces

SentralenMat is not a single room but a collection of settings under one roof. The rooftop terrace — Takterrassen — opens from midweek through the weekend and offers an outdoor dimension that is rare at this address. The café runs from early morning, making the building a genuine all-day destination. Private rooms and banqueting facilities mean it handles everything from a quiet lunch to a large celebration, with catering extending the reach further still.

Why It Works

What distinguishes SentralenMat is the setting doing real work rather than merely providing backdrop. The impressively refurbished interiors carry the weight of the building's history while feeling genuinely contemporary. The brunch and café offer bring people in through the day; the restaurant and terrace keep them through the evening. It is a place that manages to be many things without feeling scattered — a quality that earned it a place on Oslo's short list of dining destinations worth seeking out.
