The story
In 1971, two Italian friends — Franco Piacenza and Emilio Vulcano — set off on an adventure, scooter and all. Eight years later, that spirit had taken a concrete form: the first La Liguria restaurant. Today, the baton has passed to the next generation, with Damiano Piacenza and Chris Brosius running the restaurant on The Hague's elegant Noordeinde street. Their mission is straightforward — keep the traditions alive while bringing their own energy to one of the city's most enduring Italian dining addresses.
La Liguria's kitchen operates on the principles of the Slow Food movement, which originated in Italy in 1989 and stands for food that is good, clean, and fair. This isn't a marketing label here — it shapes every purchasing decision. Ingredients are imported directly from Italy: beef from La Granda, San Marzano tomatoes, Gorgonzola D.O.P., extra virgin olive oil from 100% Italian olives, sea salt from Cervia, and Caciocavallo from Basilicata, among others. Beers come from Birra Baladin, soft drinks from Lurisia. The sourcing is deliberate, traceable, and rooted in respect for producers and the land.
One of the most distinctive aspects of La Liguria is its wine program. Wine Spectator — the world's most prominent wine publication, which blind-tastes some 15,000 wines annually — has recognized La Liguria with its Best of Award of Excellence, making it one of only two restaurants in The Hague to hold this distinction. The team refers to their wine list as a "wine bible," and the depth of Italian and international selections reflects that ambition. It's a serious list, handled with genuine enthusiasm.
Lunch and dinner can be enjoyed inside the restaurant or in a beautiful, semi-covered city garden — a rare find in the heart of The Hague. The atmosphere suits the Italian philosophy of the place: unhurried, convivial, and grounded in good produce. Whether you're stopping in for a weekday lunch or settling in for a long dinner, La Liguria offers the kind of Italian hospitality that doesn't need to announce itself.
