The story
Gastrovino La Liguria occupies the Sluiswachtershuis — a freestanding monument dating from around 1880 that once served the former sea lock in the harbour of Scheveningen. In 2017, the team won a municipal tender for the building, with one condition attached: it had to become a hospitality business. The result is a place where restaurant, shop and catering service flow into one another so naturally that stepping inside genuinely feels like a detour through Italy.
The kitchen works with certified Slow Food products sourced from Italy — described by the team as puur, eerlijk en schoon (pure, honest and clean) — alongside Dutch cheeses and local specialities such as the historic Jacobus Toet Kaviar and Royal Class Salmon. That combination of Italian cuisine with carefully chosen local produce gives the menu a character that is both grounded and distinctly Ligurian in spirit. Guests can stop in for coffee, brunch, lunch, an aperitivo or a full dinner.
The wine programme earned Gastrovino La Liguria a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence in 2023 — recognition that reflects the depth and curation of a list spanning international labels. For those who want to explore at their own pace, a self-service wine tap lets guests pour by the taste (25 ml), half glass or full glass using a dedicated wine pass. In-house sommeliers are on hand to guide choices across every occasion.
Alongside the restaurant sits the Mercato, a shop stocked with wines from around the world, freshly roasted nuts, Dutch and imported cheeses, antipasti, premium olive oils and dried pastas. Products can be tasted on site, taken home or delivered. Gift cards are redeemable across both the Scheveningen location and the sister venue in Leidschendam, and a loyalty programme rewards regular visitors with points usable in both the shop and the restaurant.
