The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A Speakeasy Spirit on the Riviera Maya

Tauro Steakhouse occupies a quietly dramatic space inside Fairmont Mayakoba, the acclaimed resort just outside Playa del Carmen. Designed by Room 1804 Design, the softly illuminated interior carries the mood of a classic speakeasy — refined without being stiff, and animated on select evenings by live piano performances. A separate bar and lounge area invites guests to settle in before or after the meal, making the visit feel unhurried from the first moment to the last.

The Forbes Travel Guide has recognized Tauro with a Recommended distinction, noting both the sophistication of the space and the transparency of its open wine cellar and aging refrigerator — details that signal a genuine commitment to the steakhouse craft rather than mere theatrical decoration.

Cuts, Craft, and Local Roots

The kitchen places particular emphasis on specialty cuts. Among the signatures are steaks aged with cognac, others finished with a citrus and pistachio crust, and preparations that draw on pastrami traditions — a range that rewards guests who take time to explore beyond the familiar. While imported cuts appear on the menu, Tauro also showcases a strong selection of Mexican options, leaning on locally sourced ingredients to accompany the plates. For a steakhouse on the Riviera Maya, that balance between international technique and regional produce gives the menu a distinct sense of place.

The Bar as a Destination in Itself

The cocktail program is as carefully considered as the food. The Raging Bull — corn whisky, corn liqueur, ginger, agave nectar, and lemon juice — brings a bold, layered warmth, while the Wild West pairs Volcán Silver Tequila with corn liqueur, Ancho Reyes chile liqueur, and orange bitters for something with unmistakable Mexican character. The meticulous construction of each drink reflects the same attention to detail found across the rest of the experience.

Tauro rounds out its offer with outdoor seating, private dining options, and accommodations for vegetarian and gluten-free guests — making it a steakhouse that works for a full table of varied tastes, not just the dedicated carnivore.
