A Passion Project That Became a Destination

Ristorante La Vela began in 2008 as a personal project for Michelle Muscat — an accountant by profession who comes from a family with deep roots in the catering business. What started as a hobby gradually became a full-time commitment, shaped by persistence and a genuine love of food. Today, the restaurant sits on the Pietà seafront beside the largest marina in the Maltese islands, and its recognition by Gambero Rosso confirms what its loyal local clientele has long known: La Vela is one of Malta's most carefully run dining rooms.

The Kitchen

The cooking is in the hands of two Sicilian chefs, Enrico and Vincenzo, who bring both formal training and deep intuition to the pass. Enrico, originally from Ragusa, joined the restaurant at 21 and has grown with it for nearly a decade, now leading the kitchen as head chef. Vincenzo, from Ispica, has been at La Vela for over five years. Together they change the menu regularly, letting the season and the market dictate what reaches the table.

The approach is rooted in Mediterranean seafood: fresh rockfish, John Dory, sweet red prawns, swordfish, langoustines, oysters, seabass, and line-caught fish chosen daily. Dishes are structured around clean flavours and precise cooking rather than elaborate construction — a carpaccio di gambero, an involtino di melanzane e gambero, or a surf 'n' turf that reflects the kitchen's range. The menu is organised into antipasti, crudo di pesce, cotti di pesce, antipasti di terra, primi piatti, and secondi, with a curated wine list that the team takes seriously enough to host dedicated wine-pairing evenings with producers from regions like Friuli.

The Setting and the Regulars

Dining at La Vela means eating beside the water, with views over the Pietà marina that shift with the light and the season. The atmosphere is warm without being casual, attentive without formality. The restaurant has attracted a following that includes international visitors and a strong base of local regulars — the kind of guests who return over eighteen months and find the same level of care each time. Singers, actors, and football personalities have also passed through, though the real measure of the place is its everyday clientele.
