Barents

Barents in Riga serves Nordic-Baltic tasting menus rooted in wild ingredients, ancient techniques, and a Wine Spectator-awarded cellar.

The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

An Explorer's Kitchen in the Heart of Riga

Barents draws its identity from the cold northern waters and Baltic forests that surround Latvia. The restaurant's philosophy is direct: ingredients sourced from fishermen, hunters, and farmers known by name, prepared through ancient methods — smoking, fermentation, marination — that honour both scarcity and abundance. The result is a French and Scandinavian cuisine that feels grounded rather than performative, shaped by landscape as much as by technique.

The Team Behind the Table

Head Chef Artūrs Trinkuns articulates the kitchen's guiding principle clearly: "Gastronomy is how I understand the world and nature — how I perceive nuances that slip by unnoticed in daily life. With each dish, I strive to highlight the flavours of Northern landscapes and culinary traditions — with fresh perspective and respect for where we come from."

The wine programme is in the hands of Sommelier Nikita Zaichenkov, who builds the list around cooler-climate bottles chosen for their precision of terroir and their affinity with cold-water seafood and vegetables. That commitment to the cellar earned Barents a Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence in 2025 — a recognition that reflects genuine depth rather than volume. The wine offering is further enriched through Barents Wine Collectors, a separate curation overseen by World's Best Sommelier 2023 Raimonds Tomsons and Latvia's Best Sommelier 2017 Agnese Gintere. Head Bartender Edgars Krastiņš rounds out the beverage identity with cocktails whose Nordic character reveals itself gradually, built on house-made syrups, bitters, and cordials developed in collaboration with the kitchen.

What to Expect

The flagship experience is an eight-course tasting menu — the team's considered statement on the wild produce of the northern seas and Baltic region. For those with less time, three courses distil the restaurant's most essential flavour stories. Both paths can be paired with wines by the glass, including rare selections, or with house-made kombucha and non-alcoholic cocktails.

The space itself offers three distinct registers. The main dining room accommodates up to 62 guests and carries the full tasting menu programme. The Seafood Bar — dressed in ocean-depth tones and restrained elegance — is suited to an aperitif before a theatre show or an informal evening on its own terms. And the Chef's Table, six seats at a black oak counter overlooking the kitchen, offers an unfiltered view of the kitchen's rhythm, where the Scandinavian and French culinary traditions meet without rehearsal.
