The Veranda at Villa d'Este occupies one of the most storied settings in Italian hospitality: a terrace overlooking Lake Como at Cernobbio, within a property that began life in 1568 as a summer residence for Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio and became a luxury hotel in 1873. The weight of that history is present without being heavy — antique furnishings, water glittering beyond the windows, and a formality that never tips into stiffness.

Wine Spectator recognised the cellar here with its Best of Award of Excellence in 2023, a distinction that reflects the seriousness with which Villa d'Este approaches its wine programme. Wine Director Alex Bartoli curates the list and leads the property's Wine Dinner series — evenings built around iconic labels such as Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and Jacques Selosse, paired with the kitchen's Italian cuisine. Each dinner is framed as a "drink and learn" occasion: a chance to understand the story and territory behind a bottle, not merely to consume it.

The Dining Experience

The Veranda is the flagship dining room among Villa d'Este's four restaurants, and the one where the estate's culinary tradition is most formally expressed. The kitchen draws on fine ingredients and the rich story of this place, with Italian cuisine at its core and an approach that treats every dish as a tribute to those ingredients rather than a showcase of technique for its own sake.

The "Meet the Chef" evenings offer a more immersive way into the kitchen: guests move through the estate's dining areas over the course of an evening — a cooking demonstration with the chefs, a homemade first course and main dish with wine pairing at the Veranda, then dessert and signature cocktails with live music in the Greenhouse. It is a format that makes the culinary tradition of Villa d'Este tangible rather than abstract.
