The story
A Taverna Intru U Vicu anchors its identity in Belmonte Calabro, serving authentic Calabrian cuisine through a family kitchen shaped by decades of local tradition. The project began when the owner’s father envisioned reviving the medieval town after post-war emigration. Today his wife leads the stove, blending historic regional techniques with subtle Ligurian touches. Every element comes from the immediate landscape, including tricultivar olive oil pressed nearby and autochthonous meats sourced from local breeders.
The dining room earns recognition from ilGolosario for straightforward Calabrian cooking built around protected designation ingredients. Guests regularly order grilled fresh tuna paired with sweet Belmonte tomato steak and slow-cooked Tropea onion in a light vinegar reduction. Other kitchen favorites include scialatielli tossed with locally caught squid and bright lemon zest, followed by seasonal apple fritters. The menu shifts daily to match what arrives at the door straight from the water.
Tables sit on a two-level terrace sheltered by citrus branches and surrounded by stone stairways dating to the twelfth century. Car traffic stops beyond the district gates, leaving only the sound of conversation and distant sea breezes. The cellar features both well-known Italian labels and emerging Calabrian bottlings chosen to complement the day’s catch. Service moves at a measured pace, encouraging guests to linger over shared platters while staff explain the morning’s delivery.
