The story
64 Wine on Glasthule Road is one of those places that quietly does several things well. It operates as a fine wine shop, a café and delicatessen, and a wine bar — all under one roof on the south Dublin coast. The breadth of what's on offer earned it Wine Spectator's Best of Award of Excellence in 2023, a recognition that reflects the seriousness and range of its wine list.
The shop's philosophy is straightforward: every wine is personally tasted and selected by the team, with a strong lean toward small artisan producers whose bottles carry genuine personality. The range spans classic regions — Burgundy, Bordeaux, Champagne, Rhône, Loire, Alsace — as well as Italy, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Austria and a well-considered selection from the New World. Organic, biodynamic, natural and sustainable wines are filtered throughout, reflecting a conscious commitment the team describes plainly: "Great wines will only be possible in the future if everyone from the drinker to the seller to the producer makes a conscious decision to support sustainability in wine."
For those who want to explore beyond the mainstream, the shop stocks wines from Jura, Savoie and grower Champagnes alongside dessert wines ranging from Tokaji Aszú and Sauternes to Austrian Beerenauslese. The natural wine offering — including low-sulphur Burgundy from producers like La Maison Romane — sits comfortably alongside more classic bottles, without any ideological rigidity.
From 9am, 64 Wine opens as a café. A flaky French croissant and a well-made coffee set the tone in the morning; at lunch, the focus shifts to soups, salads and sandwiches. The deli counter carries freshly baked Guinness bread, Pedro Nieto cured meats, Frank Hederman smoked salmon, Irish cheeses, and handmade chocolates from Skelligs and Lorge — a carefully edited selection that takes the same approach as the wine list.
On Friday and Saturday evenings, the space transforms into a wine bar, open from 5pm to 9pm. It's a natural extension of the shop — a place to drink well from the same list available to take home. The bar also hosts ticketed tastings and events, including themed evenings such as a sake night led by Ireland's sake specialist Colly Murray, and En Primeur offers for vintages like the 2023 Bordeaux.
For those who can't visit in person, wine deliveries are available nationwide, with free shipping on orders over €200.
