Vinaiolo

Vinaiolo in Munich's Haidhausen brings regional Italian cooking from Venice, Friuli and Campania to life in a 1904 Trieste merchant shop setting.

The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

Osteria con Cucina in the Heart of Haidhausen

The name says it all: vinaiolo is Italian for wine merchant, and that spirit of honest, wine-forward Italian hospitality runs through everything at this Munich address. The full designation — Osteria con Cucina — signals something beyond a standard trattoria: a commitment to lesser-known regional dishes drawn from Venezia, Friuli, and Campania, cooked with genuine craft rather than crowd-pleasing familiarity.

The room itself sets the tone immediately. The interior pieces come from a merchant's shop in Trieste dating to 1904, giving the space an authenticity that no designer could replicate. The Guide Michelin described it plainly: "A piece of Dolce Vita: service with southern charm, the cooking typically Italian. The picture is completed by fittings from an old grocer's shop from Trieste." USA Today named it one of Germany's best Italian restaurants, noting that it attracts staff who are genuinely passionate about the concept, the menu, and the wine list. Gambero Rosso, the authoritative Italian food and wine guide, awarded Vinaiolo a Fork in its 2024 edition — recognition that carries particular weight for a restaurant rooted so deeply in Italian culinary tradition.

The Kitchen and the Table

Behind the stoves, chef Marco Pizzolato leads a team whose approach is to take classic Italian dishes seriously without making them stiff. The menu reads as a quiet argument for quality ingredients handled with precision. Among the antipasti, marinated raw amberjack arrives with braised artichokes and an anchovy-caper-olive vinaigrette; beef fillet tartare is finished with egg yolk, capers, anchovies, and spring onion. The pasta section includes oven-baked veal cannelloni with wholegrain bread cream and black truffle, beetroot tortelli with brown butter, poppy seeds, and Bleu d'Aosta cheese, and cavatelli with calamari, prawns, confit cherry tomatoes, and lemon thyme. For main courses, whole seabass in a salt crust or grilled is served for two; a pink veal chop Milanese — lightly breaded, around three centimetres thick — comes with Datterini tomatoes and crispy potatoes.

In the evening, guests can order à la carte or choose a four-course menu. Weekday lunches offer a changing blackboard menu at several price points, making the kitchen accessible to those who want to experience the Italian cooking at a more relaxed midday pace.

Wine and Welcome

The wine list is substantial and clearly curated with the same regional Italian focus that shapes the food. A guest quoted on the restaurant's own site put it simply: "The excellent wine list underscored the special food. But it was the service that made the evening perfect." That warmth is consistent — the Abendzeitung München noted that eating at Vinaiolo feels like being invited by old friends, with the team's genuine hospitality creating an easy atmosphere without sacrificing the quality of what arrives at the table.
