The story
Birgit and Gianni Vitale say it plainly: "Es gibt uns jetzt seit 25 Jahren, und es macht immer noch Freude für unsere Gäste zu kochen und für sie da zu sein." Twenty-five years cooking for the same neighbourhood, with the same genuine pleasure — that kind of longevity is its own credential, and it is precisely the warmth that earned Cucina Vitale a fork in the Gambero Rosso guide.
The restaurant describes itself as a Wohnzimmer-Restaurant — a living-room restaurant — and the phrase is not mere decoration. Located on Ackerstraße in Düsseldorf-Flingern Nord, the space is deliberately intimate, the menu deliberately short. What goes on the card each week is shaped by what is seasonal and regional, with supply chains kept as short as possible. Meat, fish, and vegetarian options all find a place, so there is always something for every guest at the table.
The kitchen's Mediterranean character shows in the philosophy as much as the plate: good ingredients, prepared fresh, with care and passion — "mit guten Zutaten, viel Liebe und großer Leidenschaft," as the restaurant puts it. A thoughtfully chosen wine list accompanies the food. Nothing on the menu overstays its welcome; the weekly rotation keeps things alive for regulars and gives the cooks room to follow the seasons properly.
A few times a year, Cucina Vitale gathers guests around a long communal table for themed culinary evenings. The undisputed highlight is the annual Christmas surprise menu — a multi-course affair where the kitchen decides everything, spanning meat, fish, and vegetables, and guests simply show up and trust the house. At around €50 per person excluding drinks, it has become a tradition that loyal guests book well in advance.
Takeaway is also available, an extension of the same Mediterranean cooking for those who want to bring Vitale home.
