The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A room where history sits in the walls

Stepping into Gulasch Baronen at Haparanda Stadshotell is stepping into a building that has been alive since 1900. The hotel was once a meeting point for smugglers, spies, and merchants crossing the Swedish-Finnish border — and that atmosphere has not been scrubbed away. The dining room is rustic and enveloping, every detail a quiet nod to a more dramatic era. White Guide, which awarded the restaurant its Fine level recognition in 2026, put it plainly: here you meet not just food, but history embedded in the walls.

Swedish cuisine cooked from scratch

The kitchen works with fresh, seasonal ingredients, sourcing regionally wherever possible and favouring organic produce. Everything is made from scratch, without unnecessary additives. The philosophy is straightforward — joy and care go into the cooking, and the menu reflects both tradition and finesse. Swedish cuisine at Gulasch Baronen means honest ingredients handled with skill, not shortcuts.

Several rooms, one spirit

The hotel holds several distinct spaces for dining and private events. The Förstaklass dining room seats over 100 guests and is decorated with conservator Paulus Aili's exceptional marble paintings — a detail worth arriving early to appreciate. For smaller parties, mirrored dining rooms flank the main hall. The Viltkällaren, set behind thick granite walls in three deep cellar vaults, offers an intimate and exclusive atmosphere suited to game-forward cooking: reindeer, hazel grouse, and produce drawn from the surrounding wilderness. For larger celebrations, the Festivitetssalen and Club 1900 accommodate up to 200 seated guests.

A wine list with genuine conviction

The wine programme, curated by Anna and her service team, leans toward producers with real craft and environmental awareness. A strong selection of certified organic wines runs through the list — from a Rheinhessen Riesling Magnum to an Apulian Primitivo — alongside bottles from Burgundy, the Loire, Etna, and Alentejo. Finnish berry wines from Ainoa round out the sweet wine section, a local touch that feels entirely right this far north. The list, as the team notes, is in constant evolution, driven by demand for genuine craftsmanship in harmony with the environment.
