The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

The Idea Behind Passio

The story of Passio began in 2012 in Savonlinna, where founders Jussi Hukkanen and Jesse Vottonen had been working together for years at Panimoravintola Huvila. When they decided to open their own place, they were clear about what they wanted: something entirely their own. The result, which opened in 2014 on Helsinki's Kalevankatu, landed somewhere between modern Nordic, traditional French, and a relaxed atmosphere — with surprises built in.

Jussi brings over thirty years in the brewing and restaurant world. Jesse, the head chef, has nearly two decades in the kitchen, with stints at Kämp, Vanha Palace, and Sasso, among others. Together they've shaped a restaurant where the cooking is serious but the welcome is not.

Two Restaurants in One

The White Guide, which awarded Passio its Fine level recognition, describes it well: by day, a prime spot for a light lunch and a local lager or a glass of wine; by night, something more substantial, with three- or five-course menus. That dual character is deliberate. The founders wanted a place where you could drop in casually or settle in for the evening — without the atmosphere changing too dramatically between the two.

The evening menus are built around the element of surprise. As Vottonen has put it: "Often you hear that people have to make too many difficult decisions. We've made the decisions for them. They don't know what's coming to the table." Each dish arrives like an unexpected gift — one that, the restaurant promises, you won't need to worry about liking.

Nordic Cooking, Honestly Done

Nordic cuisine at Passio is approached with what the restaurant calls intohimo — passion, in Finnish. Simple, quality ingredients; wines chosen with feeling; technique refined in both the kitchen and the dining room. The wine list is curated with the same care as the food, and wine pairing is available alongside the tasting menus.

The room on Kalevankatu is calm rather than showy — a quiet street in the heart of Helsinki that suits the restaurant's tone. Formal enough to mark an occasion, relaxed enough that you can come as you are. Private dining and group events are also catered for, with a separate cabinet space available.
