The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A Helsinki Institution Since 1966

Ravintola Lyon has stood on Mannerheimintie since 1966, evolving over the decades from a lunch-focused bistro into one of Helsinki's most recognised fine dining destinations. Situated directly across from the Finnish National Opera, it draws a crowd of culturally curious diners — opera-goers, concert attendees, theatre lovers — who arrive hungry and leave with something to remember. The White Guide has recognised Lyon at Masters level, describing it as a Helsinki institution that offers classic, refined and artsy-uplifting cuisine.

French Tradition, Nordic Roots

The kitchen grounds itself firmly in the traditions of French cuisine while weaving in Scandinavian nuance and fresh Nordic flavours. Nothing is masked: the philosophy is to honour the natural, clean taste of every ingredient. Potatoes arrive from Gobbas gård, vegetables from Långötorp's garden, herbs from Mimis' garden. When the season calls for it, the team preserves flavours in advance — berries, wild ingredients, the best of the Finnish year — so that winter menus still carry the memory of summer. Fishing and foraging trips inform new ideas on the plate.

The signature format is the surprise tasting menu — yllätysmenu — offered in three, five, seven or nine courses. Each menu is designed as a complete statement of the kitchen's values: freshness, local sourcing, and techniques that protect rather than overwhelm the raw material. Wine pairings are tailored to each menu. À la carte is available alongside, and special dietary requirements are accommodated with advance notice.

Club Lyon and the Cultural Dimension

Beyond dinner, Lyon hosts Club Lyon — an intimate series of evenings for those interested in French culture, gastronomy and history. Lectures are delivered in Finnish by writers, journalists, diplomats and musicians, paired with dishes designed specifically around the evening's theme. It is the kind of programming that makes a restaurant feel like more than a restaurant.

For groups of more than eight, the team builds custom menus on request and opens on Sundays and Mondays by arrangement. On opera and event nights, the kitchen stays open late for post-performance dinners — booking ahead is the way in.

The atmosphere Lyon aims for is the relaxed warmth of a family dinner, elevated by the structure and surprise of a carefully composed tasting menu. That combination — French-Scandinavian discipline with genuine hospitality — is what has kept this address relevant for nearly six decades.
