The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A Living Piece of Danish History

Svogerslev Kro has stood along the main road outside Roskilde since 1727, formally established by royal resolution around 1756. Few restaurants anywhere carry that kind of continuity, and the team around owner Peter Møller wears it lightly — the original, characterful rooms remain intact, but the kitchen has moved firmly into the present.

After a thorough renovation completed in the summer of 2021, Møller reopened the inn faithful to its spirit: warm, genuine hospitality in authentic surroundings, with a menu that has grown into a modern, new-Scandinavian profile. You can still order a Wiener Schnitzel, but just as likely you'll find yourself working through a succession of bright, locally sourced vegetables, fresh fish, and good Danish meat.

Rooted in the Local Landscape

The kitchen's relationship with its suppliers is one of the most striking things about Svogerslev Kro. Organic produce comes from Godis, a neighbouring farm, and the trust placed in those ingredients shows on the plate. White Guide 2026 singled the restaurant out for its "very fine level," with reviewers particularly moved by a vegetable appetiser platter — sun-warm tomatoes, tender fennel, fried shiso leaves, grilled baby carrots, smoked cheese cream, and petite zucchinis finished with taramosalata for a subtle, savoury edge. The produce was served in its purest form, and it worked completely.

The same review praised server Isabella for making guests feel genuinely welcome throughout the evening — a detail that speaks to something Svogerslev Kro has been practising for nearly three centuries.

The Space and the Offer

The inn's original rooms can seat up to 160 guests across several dining areas, making it equally suited to a quiet weekday lunch and a larger celebration. The menu's modern Scandinavian cooking — plenty of fresh fish, quality Danish meat, and the very best seasonal vegetables — sits comfortably alongside the building's historic bones. It is a place that has earned its longevity, and continues to do so.

White Guide — Very fine level

It takes complete trust in your supplier to dare serve the vegetables in their purest form as an appetizer. And we must promise that it works. A platter with the sunniest little tomatoes, tender fennel, fried shiso leaves, grilled baby carrots, a light smoked cheese cream, and grilled petite, sprightly zucchinis topped with a bit of taramosalata to add salt and a subtle smoky note. “It all comes from our organic neighbor, Godis,” we’re told by our excellent server, Isabella, who all evening makes us feel more than welcome.
