The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A Beach Hotel with Serious Culinary Ambition

Strandhotellet Blokhus opened in 2017, built with deliberate respect for the classic Danish seaside hotel tradition. High wooden panelling, light rooms, and a thoughtful mix of new and vintage furniture give the hotel its character — nostalgic in feeling, modern in comfort. Set just a short walk from the wide white beaches of the North Sea coast, the hotel sits directly on the town square of Blokhus, and within it, Restaurant Blå has quietly become one of the most accomplished dining destinations in the region.

That reputation is no accident. The White Guide awarded Restaurant Blå its "Very Fine Level" distinction, placing it among the very best in the area — a significant marker for a coastal town more often associated with summer holidays than serious gastronomy.

The Orangery and What Arrives at the Table

Diners seated in the orangery look out over a garden that functions as a calm counterpoint to the lively square just outside. The brick floor and tiled benches create what the White Guide described as "a very cozy and somewhat rustic seaside atmosphere" — a setting that feels earned rather than designed for effect.

The kitchen's philosophy, as the hotel describes it, centres on local ingredients and Danish-French cooking. The asparagus menu, composed by the hotel's Austrian head chef together with the kitchen team, offers a clear illustration of how that approach works in practice: a seven-course progression that includes dishes such as crab salad with white asparagus and lumpfish roe, scallops on asparagus with Jerusalem artichoke and wild garlic foam, and veal tenderloin with white asparagus, morels and sauce hollandaise — each course matched to a specific wine.

The White Guide's reviewers noted a smoked mussel course with "very fine texture," its smoke balanced by lightly bitter walnuts and rounded out by a mussel sauce — the kind of careful, layered construction that separates a fine dining kitchen from a competent one. The wine pairing is taken seriously, with individual matches selected for each dish.

Beyond the Restaurant

Restaurant Blå serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with the kitchen open every day from noon. The broader hotel offers wellness facilities, a pool and sauna, and a courtyard garden that comes into its own in summer — used for shellfish buffets and jazz lunches through the warmer months. Private dining, weddings, and conferences are all accommodated, with dedicated menus and the option to hire the entire hotel exclusively.

The service, according to the White Guide, maintains "exemplary dialogue with guests," meeting requests large and small with attentiveness. For anyone travelling the North Jutland coast, Restaurant Blå makes Strandhotellet Blokhus a destination worth planning around.

White Guide — Very fine level

Blokhus has received a significant quality boost in the restaurant scene over the past few years, and Restaurant Blå, located at the relatively new beach hotel by the town square, has put together a truly fine gourmet concept that places the restaurant among the very best in the area. We were seated in the orangery with a view of the garden, which lies as a quiet oasis and contrast to the bustling square just outside the hotel. The interior design throughout the hotel is very well thought out, and in the orangery the brick floor and tiled benches create a very cozy and somewhat rustic seaside atmosphere. The menu starts with a round of snacks, where a fried chicken heart provides a fine start with a mild, rounded umami flavor. The first course is smoked mussel, which has a very fine texture, and where the smoke is balanced by lightly bitter walnuts, while palm cabbage and a mussel sauce give consistency and round out the dish. A voluminous South African chardonnay with exotic fruit and a light vanilla note has enough body to keep the smoked mussel in check. The main course’s stuffed quail is filled with a finely spiced chicken soufflé filling, but it seems overdone, so the quail’s flavor disappears a bit. It is accompanied by chanterelles, roasted onions, and a morel sauce that goes hand in hand with the wine from Beaune, and overall the wine menu is matched well to the individual dishes. The service is service‑minded and attentive, but more could be said about the wines, which are introduced very briefly and somewhat uncertainly. The waitstaff, however, have exemplary dialogue with guests, and small and large wishes are met with a smile.
